Meet Your Lead Instructor Rob Flanagan
-
Founder of Sente Dojo, originally established in 2005 in New York City and now continuing its tradition in Pennington, New Jersey. Rob began his Bujinkan training under Sensei Larry Turner in 1986 and currently holds the rank of 12th-degree black belt. With nearly four decades of training and over twenty-five years of teaching experience, he brings deep knowledge, practical skill, and a genuine passion for helping students grow. Rob regularly travels to Japan to train at the Bujinkan Hombu Dōjō. He also attends seminars with senior Shihan and instructors from around the world.
-
His instruction emphasizes self-discipline, self-confidence, balance, and adaptability, taught through traditional Bujinkan methods — including posture, timing, and distance, as well as tumbling, rolling, leaping, and controlled partner work. Students are also introduced to weapons training, such as sword, staff (bō), short stick (hanbō), rope (nawa), and throwing and improvised weapons, in a safe and progressive manner.
-
Rob has lived in Pennington for over 16 years with family. As an Executive Board Member of the Hopewell Valley Education Foundation (HVEF), he actively supports the community and the Hopewell Valley Regional School District. The foundation raises money and helps fund innovative educational programs that directly support our local teachers and students. His volunteer work reflects his deep pride in the community and commitment to giving back to the schools and students that shape it’s future.
-
Rob's philosphy teaching style blends blends traditional kata (forms) and core principles (Kihon Happō & Sanshin no Kata) with applied henka (variations), fostering adaptability and natural movement that transfers into everyday life situations.
-
Rob believes martial arts training can benefit anyone willing to try, and he welcomes all students, including those with unique learning styles or individual challenges. Training is thoughtfully adapted to the individual in a group situation, so everyone can participate, learn, and excel in a safe and meaningful way.
